If your air conditioner smells bad in Calpe, the most common causes are moisture buildup inside the unit, dirty filters, blocked drainage, mould or bacteria in internal components, or poor maintenance. 100% Plumbing lists aire acondicionado among its core services, including mantenimiento y reparación, and specifically says it covers Calpe as part of Costa Blanca North.
A bad smell from an AC unit should not be ignored. In many cases, the smell starts because moisture remains inside the system and allows dirt, bacteria or mould to build up. If the problem is left unresolved, the odour often returns and the unit may also start performing less efficiently.
What usually causes a bad smell from an air conditioner?
One of the most common causes is a dirty air filter. When filters collect dust and organic matter, the smell can circulate every time the system runs. Another frequent cause is moisture inside the unit, especially around coils, trays or drainage components, where bacteria or mould can develop.
A bad smell can also be linked to a blocked condensate drain, because trapped moisture creates the right conditions for odours to build up. If the issue is affecting nearby surfaces or there are signs of water-related damage, related services such as fontanería general o más amplio servicios de fontanería may also become relevant alongside the AC repair. 100% Plumbing presents both plumbing and air conditioning as part of its Costa Blanca service offering.
¿Qué puede comprobar primero?
Before calling a professional, there are a few basic things you can check safely. Start by noticing when the smell appears. If it happens as soon as the AC starts, the cause may be inside the indoor unit, filter, or drain area. If the smell gets worse after the unit has been off for some time, stagnant moisture may be part of the problem.
You can also check whether the filter looks dirty and whether the unit has shown any other warning signs such as reduced airflow, water leakage, or weaker cooling performance. If the smell is strong, persistent, or comes back quickly after basic cleaning, the issue usually needs proper maintenance or repair.
¿Cuándo llamar a un profesional en Calpe?
You should call a professional if:
- the smell keeps coming back
- the unit also leaks water
- airflow is weak or cooling performance has dropped
- the smell is strong when the AC starts
- you suspect mould, bacteria, or blocked drainage inside the unit
- the problem returns after changing or cleaning the filter
- you want the cause diagnosed properly rather than guessed at

Por qué es importante elegir un servicio local en Calpe
Choosing a local service in Calpe matters because bad AC smells are often linked to moisture, drainage, internal dirt buildup or maintenance issues that need on-site inspection. A local team can assess the unit faster and determine whether the problem is simple cleaning, blocked drainage, poor installation, or a wider issue affecting the property.
This is especially relevant in Calpe, where many homes are apartments, villas, holiday homes and rental properties. If a property has been closed for a while, stale moisture inside the air conditioning system can become more noticeable when the unit is used again. 100% Plumbing’s service page also highlights its coverage of Calpe and nearby areas and offers direct contact details for support.
